Held annually on Ohio State’s Columbus campus, GIS Day provides an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and the broader university community to learn about geographic information systems (GIS) and the creative ways geospatial data can be used to help solve real-world problems.
This year, representatives from Facilities Information and Technology Services (FITS), Facilities Operations and Development (FOD), Planning Architecture and Real Estate (PARE), University Libraries, Center for Urban and Regional Analysis, among many others, hosted a day of learning opportunities and presentations at the Research Commons inside the 18th Avenue Library. Sessions included hands-on activities where participants created geospatial data from historical campus maps, participated in virtual reality (VR) meditation and tours, as well as engaged in presentations about campus infrastructure and the changing university landscape throughout history.
“Events like GIS Day demonstrate that collaborative nature of the work we do across the university and the creative ways geospatial data can be used for everything from historical analysis to a relaxing, meditative walk,” said Larisa Kruger, GIS manager for FITS. “We enjoy working with other departments to host such a fun, hands-on event for all Buckeyes.”
