This article describes how to request access and start using GIS Maps, ArcGIS Online or Portal (Maps and Apps).
How to Get Started
- Request access to GIS Maps, ArcGIS Online or Portal using the Request a GIS Service Form.
- If you’re not sure which one to request access to, explain your use case in the Detailed Description of the request form.
- If you request access to GIS Maps or Portal, you should receive an email notifying you that you’ve been added. It will include a link to GIS Maps or Portal as well.
- If you requested access to ArcGIS Online (AGOL), you will need to accept your invite to ArcGIS Online (should have gotten an email from ESRI).
Make sure you click the blue Ohio State University button when you log in to either AGOL or Portal. Don’t enter your username in the in the default Username box. If you do not see this option, jump to the Troubleshooting section below.
- You should be redirected to the familiar OSU shib login. Enter your name.# and password here. You’ll then be automatically redirected to the main page of ArcGIS Online or Portal.
- To find what you’re looking for in AGOL or Portal, you can:
Click the Gallery tab then search by keywords in the search bar.
Click the Content tab, click the My Organization tab in the Content menu bar, and then search by keywords in the search bar. (My Content will likely not show anything since you are probably not a map creator.)
Troubleshooting
If for some reason you end up at the generic ArcGIS Online login page that says “Sign in” and not “Sign in to The Ohio State University”, you may need to enter the specific organization information. In this case, click the down arrow by Your Organization’s URL.
Enter osugis in the “Your ArcGIS organization’s URL” box and click the box next to remember this URL.
- Click Continue and then follow the above directions to click the blue Ohio State University button to complete the login.
- We highly recommend saving your map or app links for future, time-saving access.
