How-To Guide: 3D Campus Explorer

The 3D Campus Explorer allows users to add 3D buildings to their campus of interest.

This section provides detailed information about each tool included in this application. Space Information is the only tool that requires login access.

Map Tools

  • Click this button to toggle the tool bar on the left of the map on or off.

Table View

  • Click this button to view the tables of all the data layers in the map.  Sort or filter by various attributes. Or even export the tables for use in Excel.

Tools Panel on the left

Add Model

  • Click the button to add a 3D building model to the viewer
  • Type the building name in the search box, select the model desired and click the Done button.
  • You can add multiple models to the viewer.
  • The map will not zoom to the desired location, so use the search tool if the map isn't already at your area of interest.

Building Explorer

  • The Builder Explorer will allow you to view the model in more detail; by floor, by
  • Click the tiny drop down arrow in the widget and select which model you want to interrogate. You can only interrogate one model at a time
  • Once a building is selected, you can toggle between floors, and then turn on and off all the various architectural, electrical or structural elements of the model

Elevation Profile

  • Make sure the map is oriented along the profile you will want to view by using the fly controller first
  • Then click the map to place the first point and double click to finish.
  • A diagram of the elevation profile will appear in the window
  • View the profile stats in regard to slope, min's and max's
  • Click the reset button to clear the results and draw another profile

Measurement

  • Click on the map to start measuring and double click to finish.
  • You can choose to measure lines or areas and also select the unit of measure.

3D Toolbox

  • Adjust for daylight and shadows in the viewer.
  • Adjust for weather; like rain, snow and fog
  • Analyze what areas and portions of buildings are in shadow throughout the day
  • Analyze line of sight. Make sure to add whatever building models are in the line of sight to ensure an accurate analysis
  • Slice will allow you to slice through the building.  Make sure you have the model loaded in the Building Explorer with no levels loaded, but with the desired disciplines turned on to get the most out of this tool. Use the orange side dots in the viewer to drag the slice across the building and dynamically change your view. You can also exclude portions of the building from the slice.  

Fly Controller

  • Rotate fly- Click this button and hold the right mouse button down and then drag across the map to rotate the view up or down or spin around the map centroid. This button does not zoom in our out like the plus or minus buttons or the scroll wheel.

Map Layers Tool

  • This tool lets you change what information you see on the map. To make a layer visible, check its checkbox. To turn it off, uncheck the checkbox.

Search Tool

  • The Search Tool lets you find a building or another location on the map
  • Type in the search box, then click the result that you’re interested in.  The map should zoom to your asset of interest.
  • Click the “x” to clear your search and selection

Bookmarks

  • The Bookmarks tool lists many campus areas, including: Columbus, Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark, Wooster, OSU Airport, OSU Golf Club, Stone Lab, East hospital, all the Outpatient Care sites, all the ARS and CFAES sites
  • After clicking on one of the sites, the map will zoom to the extent of that campus.
