Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Drone Operations- Generic Preflight Planning and Checks

Topic:

Overview

This is supplemental information to the specific flight checklists for each drone.

Existing Obstacles:

  • Cranes over construction
  • WOSU tower and guidewires
  • 315 corridor
  • Radio tower near target and 315
  • Airspace restrictions

Pre- flight objectives:

  • Measure the heights of the existing obstacles. If needed, learn how to get a waiver for increased flight height for this project.
  • Create all flight plans at once to ensure optimal coverage is reached per flight.
  • Fly all flights within a few working days. Maximizing the flight time near solar noon.
  • Ensure there will not be re-flights because of overlapping collection requests.
  • Minimize number of times a base station is moved in planning.
  • Plan to fly the most challenging flights first (flights with outlined obstacles above).
    • The first flight in a few months should always be a routine refresher. This point assumes pilot flight currency.
